How We Test and Rate Online Casinos - 4-Phase Methodology

casino review methodology ireland

Phase 1: Licence verification

casino review methodology ireland detail

Our first port of call when reviewing any online casino ireland operator is to confirm the licence on which it operates. We check the footer of the website for the licence number and cross-reference it with the issuing authority’s online register. For Irish players, the most common regulators are the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC), and the Curacao eGaming authority. Under the incoming Gambling Regulation Act 2025, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) will eventually issue its own licences, but for now we treat MGA and UKGC licences as the gold standard. We also verify the operator’s physical address and note any historical sanctions. If a licence is missing or expired, the casino fails Phase 1 and we do not proceed further.

Phase 2: Deposit and bonus claim

Once the licence checks out, we move to the deposit process. We test all payment methods popular in Ireland, including Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Trustly, and Revolut. We note the minimum deposit amount (usually €10 or €20) and whether any fees apply. Next, we claim the welcome bonus exactly as a new player would. We read the full terms and conditions — wagering requirements, game weightings, max bet limits, and expiry dates — and record the bonus value after wagering. We also check whether the bonus is available to Irish residents (some UKGC-licensed brands exclude ROI players). If the bonus terms are unfair or the deposit process fails, we flag it in our review. Phase 3: Gameplay session

With the bonus credited, we play through a sample of slots, table games, and live dealer titles. We test the game library from providers such as NetEnt, Microgaming, Play’n GO, and Evolution Gaming. We evaluate the user experience on desktop and mobile, including loading times, navigation, and search filters. We also monitor the KYC (Know Your Customer) triggers — some operators ask for documents before any withdrawal, while others allow small cashouts first. We note the ease of uploading a passport or driving licence and the time taken for verification. A smooth KYC process is critical for Irish players who want to avoid delays later. Phase 4: Withdrawal stress test

This is the most revealing phase. We request a withdrawal of at least €100 (or the maximum allowed via the chosen method) and record the processing time. We test each available method — bank transfer, e-wallet, debit card, and instant options like Revolut and Apple Pay (where supported). We measure the time from request to funds landing in the player’s account. We also check for hidden fees, withdrawal limits, and whether the casino reverses the withdrawal due to pending bonus wagering. If the casino delays payment beyond its stated policy or demands excessive documentation, we note it as a red flag. A casino that passes this phase with speed and transparency earns high marks in our final rating. See also irish casino scoring criteria.

Weighted scoring across 7 criteria

We assign a weighted score to each of the following seven criteria, with the total out of 100: See also Alpine Casino Review IE.

Criterion Weight What we measure
Licence & Trust 20% Regulator (MGA, UKGC, Curacao), history, GRAI compliance
Payment Methods 15% Irish-friendly options (Revolut, Apple Pay, PayPal), fees, speed
Bonus & Terms 15% Wagering requirements, game weighting, fairness of T&Cs
Game Selection 15% Number of titles, provider quality, live dealer, mobile optimisation
KYC & Security 10% Verification process, data protection, eCOGRA or iTechLabs certification
Withdrawal Speed 15% Processing time, limits, fees, stress test results
Customer Support 10% Live chat response time, email, phone (+353 availability), Irish hours

We apply this scoring consistently across every brand we review, including spin-casino, playzee, casumo, leovegas, and mr-green. The final rating is a weighted average, and we publish the breakdown so readers can see exactly where each operator excels or falls short. We also look for independent testing seals from eCOGRA and iTechLabs; these indicate that the games are provably fair and the random number generators are audited. Conflict-of-interest disclosure

At ShamrockCasinoChronicle, we maintain strict editorial independence. Niamh Walsh, our KYC & Privacy Specialist, leads the methodology design and oversees all testing. We do not accept payment from operators for positive reviews. Some of the brands we review, including spin-casino, playzee, casumo, leovegas, and mr-green, may have commercial agreements with our publication, but these relationships never influence our ratings or editorial content. Every review is conducted using the same four-phase methodology, and we disclose any affiliate links or sponsored placements in a separate section of each article. If a conflict arises — for example, if an operator attempts to influence the withdrawal stress test — we report it transparently and, if necessary, remove the operator from our recommended list. Our readers in Ireland deserve honest, unbiased assessments, and we hold ourselves to that standard. 18+. Gamble responsibly. Visit gamblingcare.ie for support.
